GROW KIT IN A BAG™

TEXT GUIDE: GROW KIT IN A BAG™

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

We specifically designed this bag to make it as easy as possible to grow mushrooms with the least number of supplies.

Required items you’ll need include…

  • Injection Port (included with order)
  • Alcohol Wipes (included with order)
  • Scotch Tape
  • Syringe with 10 CCs of Liquid Culture or Spores (can be purchased online by searching for premium spores)
  • Sterilized 18 Gauge Needle for Syringe

INOCULATION:

  1. Wipe the injection port with an alcohol wipe to make sure that it’s absolutely sterile. You can also use 70% isopropyl alcohol and paper towels, if you prefer.
  2. Attach a sterile needle to your syringe.
  3. Carefully insert your syringe needle into the injection port and inject the bag with 10 ccs of liquid culture or spores. If you’re working with spores, make sure that all the fluid is injected in a single spot in the bag so the reproductive cells are near each other.
  4. Holding the injection port in place, carefully pull the needle out and place the cap safely back on. Dispose of the needle in a designated receptacle.
  5. Cover the injection port with scotch tape to protect the bag from outside contamination.
  6. If you’re doing multiple injections with the same needle, make sure to re-sterilize your needle with a lighter between each injection.

STORE YOUR BAG UNTIL 50% COLONIZED:

  1. Store the bag in a semi-dark room with no direct sunlight and keep the temperature at about 70-78 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure the bag is stored on a shelf at least waist height to protect your bag from bacteria that naturally collects near the ground. You will store you bag until it is 50% colonized (50% covered in white mycelium growth). The amount of time you need to store your bag depends on whether you injected your bag with liquid culture or a spore solution:

If Using Liquid Culture: Store your bag for about 1 week. At this point, your bag should be 50% colonized.

If Using Spores: Store your bag for about 3 weeks. At this point, your bag should be 50% colonized.

SHAKE BAG:

  1. Gently kneed and shake your bag to break up the mycelium until it’s evenly distributed throughout the bag.
  2. After shaking the bag, place it back in storage for about another week so it can finish colonizing. Keep it in storage at the same conditions as before (semi-dark room with no direct sunlight, temperatures at about 70-78 degrees Fahrenheit, with the bag at least waist-height off the ground).

PREP BAG FOR MUSHROOM GROWTH:

  1. Wipe down your hands and the entire bag with alcohol, concentrating on the top two corners.
  2. Wipe your scissors with alcohol and make a ½ inch slit right below the seal on the top two corners of the bag (for reference, check out the video above at the 4-minute 10-second mark).
  3. Lightly pull the middle of your bag up and down to bello air into the slits. Do this for about 30 seconds.
  4. Pull your bag upright again and place the bag in a clean environment at about 65-72 degrees Fahrenheit for another 7-10 days.
  5. Repeat steps 12 & 13 every day until your mushrooms are fully grown and ready to harvest.

HARVEST MUSHROOMS!

  1. Observe your bag’s progression and watch for signs of fruiting (actual mushroom growth). As your mushrooms grow, they’ll stretch their veil and the cap will extend away from the ring. At this point it’s time to harvest your mushrooms. Be sure to handle the bag gently to prevent the spores from dropping.
  2. Wipe your hands, scissors, bag, and surface area of workstation with alcohol.
  3. Cut an incision into the bag about an inch above the growing medium and cut around the bag entirely separating top portion from the bottom half. Place the top portion of your bag carefully off to the side.
  4. Lightly twist and pull at the base of the stem to remove the mushroom. Set the mushroom aside on a clean plate/tray/bin/etc. Repeat this step until all of the mushrooms have been removed.
  5. After each mushroom has been harvested, cut the bottom portion of each stem off and make sure there isn’t any growing medium on the mushrooms.
  6. Dry your mushrooms using your preferred method.
  7. Enjoy!

GROWING MUSHROOMS WITH LIQUID CULTURE: LION'S MANE AND OYSTER

TEXT GUIDE: GROWING LION'S MANE AND OYSTER MUSHROOMS

INCLUDED SUPPLIES:

Alcohol Wipes | Injection Port | Liquid Culture Syringe (10 CCs) | Sterilized Needle | Sterilized Millet

OTHER SUPPLIES YOU’LL NEED:

Grain Bag w/ Lightning Colonization™ (3 lbs.) | Hardwood and Softwood Substrate (two 5 lbs. Bags) | Medium Binder Clips (6) | Scissors or Box Cutter | Scotch Tape | Micropore Tape (optional)

STERILIZATION AND CLEANLINESS:

When growing mushrooms, sterilization and cleanliness is incredibly important so your grow doesn’t get destroyed by contamination. Fortunately, our liquid culture is specially selected from mushroom genetics that are exceptionally resistant to contamination. With that being said, no strain of mushroom is completely resilient to contamination, so it’s always best to make sure your workstation is sterile and only quality growing medium is used.

STORING LIQUID CULTURE:

For best results, keep your liquid culture in the sealed bag until you’re ready to use it. If you already removed it from the packaging, you can just put it in a ziplock baggie when storing it.

Keep the liquid culture away from direct sunlight and store it in one of the following ways:

  • At 70-78°F for up to 1 week after receiving your liquid culture.
  • In a fridge no colder than 42 degrees for up to 2 years. When taking it out of the fridge, let it rest in a room 70-78°F for 24 hours prior to use.

STEP 1 - INOCULATION:

  1. If your grain bag doesn’t already have an injection port, place one near the bottom of the bag. Wipe the injection port and surrounding area with an alcohol wipe to make sure that it’s absolutely sterile.
  2. Attach a sterile needle to your syringe. Don’t let the needle touch anything so it remains as sterile as possible.
  3. Carefully insert your syringe needle into the injection port and inject the bag with 10 CCs of liquid culture (our kit comes with two 5 CC syringes, so simply inject both syringes into the same bag).

STEP 2 - STORE THE GRAIN BAG UNTIL IT’S FULLY COLONIZED WITH MYCELIUM:

*This is what a fully colonized bag looks like.

  • In a room that’s away from direct sunlight at 60-70°F.
  • Off the ground at least waist height.
  • For Lions Mane: Store for 10-20 days, until the bag is fully colonized.
  • For All Oysters: Store for 10-15 days, until the bag is fully colonized.

Why is there a range in the number of days it takes for your bag to colonize? Your grain bag will colonize quicker if you leave it undisturbed, refraining from picking up and moving the bag during this time. The conditions of the storage room can also affect the growth rate. It will likely take closer to 10 days for your bag to fully colonize, but if you find that your bag needs more time, be patient and let it stay in storage longer!

STEP 3 - MIX COLONIZED GRAIN WITH SUBSTRATE

  1. Wipe down your grain bag and substrate bag with alcohol pads.
  2. Cut the top of the grain bag open.
  3. Cut both tops of the two substrate bags open, just below the impulse seals.
  4. Pour half the colonized grain into one substrate bag, and pour the rest of the colonized grain into the other substrate bag.
  5. Gently knead and shake the growing medium until it’s completely mixed together.
  6. Push all the air out of the bag. Roll the top of the bag down all the way to the growing medium (roll it like you would when closing a bag of chips, and roll it so it’s tight).
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the second bag, if you haven’t done so already.
  8. Place 3 binder clips across the roll of each bag so it stays firmly in place.

STEP 4 - STORE BOTH BAGS UNTIL THE MIXTURE IS FULLY COLONIZED:

  • In a room that’s away from direct sunlight at 60-70°F.
  • Off the ground at least waist height.
  • For Lions Mane: Store for 15-20 days, until the mixture is fully colonized.
  • For All Oysters: Store for 10-15 days, until the bag is fully colonized.

STEP 5 - CUT AN “X” INTO THE BAG:

(Repeat these steps for both bags)

  1. Sterilize your scissors or box cutter with alcohol wipes.
  2. Cut a 2” tall “X” at the center of one side of the bag, taking care not to cut into the growing medium too much.
  3. Optional: Cover your “X” with two strips of micropore tape to better protect the mycelium from outside contamination.
  4. Mist the “X” with water one per day.
  5. Fully mature mushrooms will grow out of the “X”  after 1-2 weeks. It’s now time to harvest!

Side Note: If you used micropore tape, the mushrooms will naturally push the tape aside as they grow. No need to manually remove the micropore tape.

STEP 6 - HARVEST YOUR MUSHROOMS!

  1. Gently grab your mushroom at the base. Twist and pull the mushroom until it is detached. Gently brush off any growing medium that’s on the mushroom.
  2. Continue to mist your “X” every day so you can get multiple harvests. If done properly, you should get 3-5 harvests.
  3. Lions Mane, Pink Oyster, White Oyster, and Blue Oyster mushrooms are best when consumed fresh after harvest. However, you can put them in the fridge so they last longer. If you put them in a fridge, keep them exposed to the air. It’s not recommended to keep the mushrooms in a sealed container because they will become slimy after 1-2 days.
